3D with a border!

After seeing Peter Callessen's work, i have had a go at my own 3D and 2D mixture. I started off with something quite basic;

I folded the sheet in half to get symmetry

When unfolded, it created this atom-like shape which protruded form the page

I liked the idea of this, but i felt that the plain white sheet which wasn't cut was a bit boring. So i experimented with creating this into a frame for this abstract shape;

Flat image

As shown here, this could then be put against a flat surface such as a window, or even across a roof.

2D and 3D Mixture

I found an artist called Peter Callessen online who works with paper. I found his work pretty cool, because like Jen Stark, he works with 3D on a 2D surface, but takes it to another level. Rather than just laying the sculpture on a 2D surface, he actually cuts the 2d surface to create a story, as shown below.

Just Awesome!

I really like this final image, because it has been created using only one sheet of paper. It is so simple but I find it amazing how it all tells a story and sets a scene. I would love to try something like this, but bear in mind i need to respond to the theme 'Repeat', so wish me luck!

Flowers

I have taken photos of some flowers i have noticed around inside and outside (see if you can tell which ones are real or not :p ).
Flowers are organic, and naturally beautiful. The way the petals flow creates a soothing sense of movement. Flowers can be created using paper, as seen in the Origami post back in my blog. Due to their vibrant colours, they can be very visually attractive.

I love the middle bit of this flower (thats the scientific way of saying it!)

This one almost looks like the horn of a trumpet

 These flowers have lovely smooth features, much like the effect paper gives, so i think i might have to look into this!

Jen Stark

Another Artist i have found online, Jen Stark creates these wonderfully colourful pieces using 2D and 3D sculpturing.

Obvious flower like response

I love the way her work seems to flow outwards from the 2D sections, it creates a sense of movement in the piece. Some of her work is based of flower designs which use the petals to create the movement.

It's a paper monster! (ish...)

Its not really a paper monster, just a little experiment i have done with slots in bits of paper cut into the same shape. i wanted to see how strong this could be, and also if a large structure could be created like this as a response to my brief 'Repeat'. I got a bit of inspiration from this from attending a laser cutting session at uni, where i learned not only how to use a laser cutting machine, but what you can actually do with one. i went in knowing nothing and came out with another tool in my arsenal.

Using slots alone wasn't exactly what i'd call strong, but its a way of connecting two shapes together on an edge. I used normal white card to create this, but using thicker card would have strengthened it further, something i'll have to bear in mind if i require this kind of technique in my development.

Rob Ryan

This is a guy i've seen around on other blogs which has caught my eye. He doesn't work in 3D, but the intricate shapes he cuts out are amazing. He tells little stories within the pictures by cutting words into them which i quite like. I can see that a lot of care goes into his work.

Experiment 3

I liked the organic, flower like feel to some of Richard Sweeney's work and wanted to explore this. So i decided to create something which seemed like it was flowing outwards like the petals of a flower, and heres what i came up with!

I think my next step is to look at other paper artists for more inspiration and see where that leads me!
